It’s Grilling Season!
So here are some Life Hacks to promote safety.
-
Completely shut a grill off before leaving it unattended.
-
Never leave a grill unattended.
-
Have a fire extinguisher nearby.
-
Grill in a well-vented area, especially if grilling with a charcoal grill, which gives off toxic and highly-flammable fumes.
-
Keep a safe distance between your grill and any structures, especially your home, garage, and/or deck.
-
Clean your grill after each grilling.
-
Regularly inspect your grill for mechanical problems.
-
Use the 10 to 5 rule while lighting a gas grill if the grill does not start within 10 seconds, turn off the gas, open the lid and wait 5 minutes before trying again.
-
In the event of a fire:
-
Call 9-1-1. Have bystanders clear the area by sending them to the road to flag down the fire fighters.
-
If safely possible, shut off the valve to a gas grill.
-
Use a fire extinguisher to contain the fire if it is still small. Use discretion when using water to put out a fire. Water can cause grease to spread, instead of quelling a fire.
-
Clear the area if the fire gets close to a propane tank.
-
Have a happy and safe grilling season!
