A New COVID-19 App

 

Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo and New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy recently announced the launch of COVID-19 exposure notification mobile apps (in their respective states) that will serve as crucial tools to supplement the effort to trace and contact individuals subject to a COVID-19 exposure. The apps, COVID Alert NY and COVID Alert NJ, notify users of potential COVID-19 exposure while maintaining user privacy and security. With the launch, New York and New Jersey join Pennsylvania and Delaware in creating a regional COVID Alert app network that operates across state lines to stop the spread of COVID-19. Connecticut also has announced it will launch an app in the near future using the same technology. Download the free app here.

 

Your Policy & COVID-19

 

A policyholder notification will be sent at the request of the New York Department of Financial Services directly from insurers to all insureds that have one of many forms of commercial property or liability policies to inform them of how COVID-19 impacts any business interruption coverage they may have on their policies.

 

While many policies do include forms of business interruption insurance, this coverage is generally afforded when there is coverage for direct loss of damage to covered property such as buildings or business property which leads to the cessation of business operations. Illnesses to people do not constitute loss or damage to covered property. Therefore, there would be no coverage for business interruption from COVID-19. Consequently there would not be supply chain or contingent business interruption coverage.

 

This notice is not a contract of insurance and does not change your policy in any way. It is intended to provide generalized information. It is recommended that you review your policy carefully to determine your rights, duties, and obligations. Our current clients may contact us or your insurer directly to receive a copy of the notice provided by your insurer, or assistance in reviewing your policy.
