The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has determined that most of the serious crashes involving an animal result from the evasive maneuvers drivers take in an attempt to avoid hitting it. Sharp, sudden swerves can cause head-on collisions with another vehicle or cause drivers to strike a fixed object like a tree or utility pole. These types of crashes are more likely to result in serious injury or death, while striking an animal can damage the vehicle, but often leave the occupants uninjured.
