The Basic Fix It Guy      I'm A Sole Proprietor And They Are Making Me Buy Workers Compensation      I Am A Handyman With Employees

Handyman as defined by many insurers:

Insurance companies in general define a handyman as someone who is hired to do a variety of miscellaneous repair work that is found in a residential setting. These would be persons who might be called jacks of all trades but specializing in none. That would mean the contractor may not be licensed in any specialty trade and may not be trained as a professional artisan. A handyman then would do some of almost anything, including a small amount of roof repair if incidental to other work at that same location or property owner. (Some insurers exclude roofing from coverage.)

We have found a few insurance companies that understand the special complexities of handyman work and are happy to write insurance policies to cover them. Our insurers will not write a policy for contractors that will do roofing only work.

NOTE: Our insurers will not write a policy for contractors that will do roofing only work.

As with any business the bottom line is a concern. We have seen premiums under $600 a year. Keep in mind there is likely not enough coverage for most businesses at this minimal coverage. Many Handyman operations will find coverage at under $800 per year. For specific information on a policy that fits your needs, including Workers Compensation for Handymen please contact us at 607-843-8860 or email insurance@drickardinsurance.com.

Hint: The longer you have been in business and insured the better opportunity you have for the best insurance pricing. So keep your insurance even during your off-season.

Jack Of All Trades

Our insurers have three major classes of Handymen. The first is a person who works by himself, or with an occasional helper, and does all types of minor repairs in a residential setting but will not do any roofing only jobs. If you think you fit in this class you might be surprised to find policies in the under $600 per year area. However, we strongly encourage you to get more than the smallest policy you can find for the many reasons we are happy to discuss with you at insurance@drickardinsurance.com or 607-843-8860.

Note: Your helpers and "independent contractors" may actually be considered employees. NYS has specific rules for what is an employee and what is an independent contractor. If the helper, independent, sub contractor that works for you does not have their own insurance you may need to cover them under your general liability, workers compensation and NYS DBL/PFL policies.

Handyman With No Employees That Needs Works Compensation

One man operations being forced to buy a workers compensation policy. We can arrange coverage for a sole proprietor who does all of the work himself with, no employees or helpers, to acquire "if any" Workers Compensation (WC) policy that the owner excludes himself on. (We don't think a workers compensation policy that excludes the owner is in his best interests.) The total cost of the WC package has been in the $3,000 a year area. Actual premiums depend upon coverage specific case by case underwriting. We are happy to discuss all of your insurance needs with you at insurance@drickardinsurance.com or 607-843-8860.

General Eligibility Rules
  • No More than 5 employees including the owner(s)
  • Primarily Residential Work - Commercial work considered on a case by case basis
  • The more experience in class the better price eligibility
  • $1,500,000 Gross Receipts or less
  • Less than 35% of work subcontracted to others
  • No General Contractors
  • No work done outside of New York State

Handyman With Employees

The third class of Handyman we can help includes all of the stipulations listed above except he has no more than 5 full or part time employees. The Commercial General Liability, Workers Compensation, and NYS DBL/PFL insurers will be separate companies. Contact us so we can custom design an insurance package for this need at insurance@drickardinsurance.com or 607-843-8860.
