Delis of many types are still surviving in New York State. In nearly every community you can still find small delis, and to support this stubborn, New Yorker, we can not be defeated spirit, DRickard Insurance can also be found serving most communities with insurance options customized for the needs of each deli.

As insurance agents with many choices of Restaurant Insurance Companies we have been able to find quality money saving solutions. DRickard Insurance has solutions for the variety of needs of delis.  The solutions can be complicated.  Don't worry, we want to help.  The sooner you call 607-843-8860 the sooner we can help you.  Some customers email insurance@drickardinsurance.com  copies of their policies first while others fax 607-843-5519 them to speed up the process.  Usually if we have all of the information we need, you can have a price in under 30 minutes.

Below is a list of the most common insurance products Food Services request of us and some of the concerns we have that we feel restaurant owners should be aware of.  This list is by no means complete.  In fact, for a policy designed specifically to address you, and your needs, rather than a cookie cutter approach to insurance, you should give us a call.  If you do not want a policy from us but do want some advice, you may make use of our consulting services.  For fee details call 607.843.8860.  If you have us design a policy or policies with companies that we represent as an agent we do not charge a fee.*

Costs, what are the average costs?  Insurance needs differ greatly because of this insurance costs do also.  Over the years we have see restaurant insurance premiums as low as $250 a year.  The most common small one or two employee lunch and breakfast quick stop insurance packages have premium costs in the ball park of annual premiums: Business Owner's Policy $1,000, plus Workers Compensation $1,000, Plus NYS DBL $150.  So that totals about $2,150 annual need.  Do not take these numbers as a quote or guarantee.  Contact us at insurance@drickardinsurance.com 607-843-8860 for an insurance plan designed to fit your business strategy and needs.

Another factor that saves deli's insurance premiums is not having cooking or deep frying operations.

We are often asked what insurance coverage is needed for a deli.  There is no one answer for that question.  The best insurance practice is to look at your specific situation and design a policy that addresses it and your concerns.  Working with agents who understand your type of business is very helpful.  Additionally helpful is completely answering the agent's questions and volunteering as much information as you can think of, related to your business.  In this way the agent will be able to help you find the most correct restaurant insurance coverage available.

  •  Coverage Options Available:

    • Building

      • Glass - Most often what we see is that the deli does not own the building it is housed in.  This is even the case when the building and the restaurant have the same ownership.  Usually the windows are contractually the responsibility of the tenant.  Because of this a special endorsement may be need on your policy protecting you from this contractual liability.

    • Business Personal Property

      • Fixtures - Many times you must upgrade the building you occupy by attaching fixtures, beautification and lighting elements to the building.  This now makes the enhancements part of the building.  To cover your interest in these a special endorsement may be needed on your policy.

      • Inventory - Depending on the season your inventory may fluctuate greatly.  Addressing this when writing the policy may save you money.

      • Refrigerated Products/Spoilage - To get this coverage at the best price you should keep an active contract with your HVAC up to date and have your refrigeration and freezing units serviced regularly.

      • Property of Others - Refrigeration, beverage systems and display cases are often provided by your vendors.  You are responsible for them, therefore you need to insure them.

    • Loss of Use of premises

    • Additional Expenses - Your loss of use of your premises is not the only scary thing that can happen.  You need to keep your well qualified staff and you valuable customers.  This will create extra or uncommon expenses.

    • Liability

      • Commercial General Liability - This is the insurance protection that covers bodily injury.  Many times the liability needs for your restaurant gets complicated when you retain a separate location for parking and especially when it is not on the same deed as the restaurant.

      • Personal Injury Liability -

      • Products Liability - Is especially important when food and prepared food is your product.  This can be an even greater concern when you have your own house products under your own label.

      • Cyber Liability - You have a legal responsibility to protect consumers from there information being stolen.  If it is stolen you have a legal responsibility to help the possibly harmed consumers.  A loss could financially cripple you business.  You take credit cards for payments all day long.  Criminals want that information and are trying to get it.  Your staff may be one of those criminals you need this protection!

      • Liquor Legal Liability - The less beer, wine, and liquor you serve, sell, or allow in your restaurant the more insurance options you will have and the fewer insurance dollars you will need to spend.  The next factor effecting the cost of your total insurance package the percentage your alcohol sales are of the total receipts.  HINT, do not ring soft drinks and alcoholic drinks on the same key group on your register.

      • Additional Insureds - You may be a franchise, have equipment lent or leased, be a tenant (even if the building has common ownership with the business), or use public space by permit.  All of these situations create the need for or requirement of Additional Insureds being added to your policy.

    • Identity Theft - Both businesses and persons are falling victim to these crimes.  The more your information is digitally available the more you, your customers, and your business is exposed.

    • Business Auto - Most delis do not have deliveries.  However some food does seem to get delivered and employees are sent out on errands.  This does create a business auto exposure for the business that can often be addressed by endorsing special coverage on the Restaurant Business Owner Policy. Also, the business should maintain abstracts of every driver's Department of Motor Vehicles report updated at least annually.  If a driver has a poor driving history they should no longer be allowed to drive.  Some insurers that would not look at insuring a business with delivery will reconsider when the auto(s) insurance is in the name of the business.

  • Employment Insurances

    • Workers Compensation - NYSIF is not your only option.  Qualifying restaurants may be eligible for Restaurant Safety Group insurance that significantly saves its members on net cost dollars.  Yes, for discounted Workers Compensation Insurance you should contact us today to see if you are eligible!  607-843-8860 insurance@drickardinsurance.com

    • NYS DBL

    • Benefits

  • Discounts and money saving ideas

    • Pay in full

    • Higher deductibles

    • Trade association discounts

    • Sprinkler system discounts - Qualifying systems save you from 10% to 40% depending on the details on your restaurant insurance premiums.

*Fees will be charged for products that we do not sell directly or for representing you to insurers as a broker, for consulting service where no insurance product is sold, or for handling NYSIF Workers Compensation policies in any capacity.
