Pizzeria Insurance Products

Pizzerias are our largest single food service type of customer.   It could be that for years we enjoyed pizza so this is a natural fit for our management.  That being said, our customers are multiple generations and locations of the same family.  We must be getting the insurance right at a fair price.  Please contact us so we may work with you to craft the insurance policy that fits your needs for now and the future.

Below is a list of the most common insurance products pizzerias request of us and some of the concerns we have that we feel pizzeria owners should be aware of.  This list is by no means complete.  In fact, for a policy designed specifically for you address your needs, rather than a cookie cutter approach to insurance, you should give us a call.  If you do not want a policy from us but do want some advice, you may make use of our consulting services.  For fee details call 607.843.8860.  If you have us design a policy or policies with companies that we represent as an agent we do not charge a fee.*

Costs, what are the average costs?  Insurance needs differ greatly because of this insurance costs do also.  Over the years we have see restaurant insurance premiums as low as $250 a year.  The most common small one or two employee pizza shop insurance packages have premium costs in the ball park of annual premiums: Business Owner's Policy $1,000, plus Workers Compensation $1,000, Plus NYS DBL $150.  So that totals about $2,150 annual need.  Do not take these numbers as a quote or guarantee.  Contact us for an insurance plan designed to fit your business strategy and needs.

We are often asked what insurance coverage is needed for a pizzeria.  There is no one answer for that question.  The best insurance practice is to look at your specific situation and design a policy that addresses it and your concerns.  Working with agents who understand your type of business is very helpful.  Additionally helpful is completely answering the agent's questions and volunteering as much information as you can think of, related to your business.  In this way the agent will be able to help you find the most correct pizzeria insurance coverage available.

  •  Coverage Options Available:

    • Building

      • Glass - Most often what we see is that the Pizzeria does not own the building it is housed in.  This is even the case when the building and the pizzeria have the same ownership.  Usually the windows are contractually the responsibility of the Pizzeria.  Because of this a special endorsement may be need on your policy protecting you from this contractual liability.

    • Business Personal Property

      • Fixtures - Many times you must upgrade the building you occupy by attaching fixtures, beautification and lighting elements to the building.  This now makes the enhancements part of the building.  To cover your interest in these a special endorsement may be needed on your policy.

      • Inventory

      • Refrigerated Products/Spoilage - To get this coverage at the best price you should keep an active contract with your HVAC up to date and have your refrigeration and freezing units serviced regularly.

      • Property of Others - Refrigeration, beverage systems and display cases are often provided by your vendors.  You are responsible for them, therefore you need to insure them.

    • Loss of Use of premises

    • Additional Expenses

    • Liability

      • Commercial General Liability

      • Personal Injury Liability -

      • Products Liability - Is especially important when food and prepared food is your product.

      • Cyber Liability - You have a legal responsibility to protect consumers from there information being stolen.  If it is stolen you have a legal responsibility to help the possibly harmed consumers.  A loss could financially cripple you business.  You take credit cards for payments all day long.  Criminals want that information and are trying to get it.  Your staff may be one of those criminals you need this protection!

      • Liquor Legal Liability - The less beer, wine, and liquor you serve, sell, or allow in your restaurant the more insurance options you will have and the fewer insurance dollars you will need to spend.  The next factor effecting the cost of your total insurance package the percentage your alcohol sales are of the total receipts.  HINT, do not ring soft drinks and alcoholic drinks on the same key group on your register.

    • Identity Theft - Both businesses and persons are falling victim to these crimes.  The more your information is digitally available the more you, your customers, and your business is exposed.

    • Business Auto - More companies are willing to insure Pizzerias when there is no delivery.  For those Pizzerias with delivery a great risk management solution that will help protect the business and often save money in the long run is to have the auto(s) used for delivery to be owned and insured by the business.  In this way the amount of coverage and in force status of the business auto insurance policy is controlled by the business.  Also, the business should maintain abstracts of every driver's Department of Motor Vehicles report updated at least annually.  If a driver has a poor driving history they should no longer be allowed to drive.  Some insurers that would not look at insuring a business with delivery will reconsider when the auto(s) insurance is in the name of the business.

  • Employment Insurances

    • Workers Compensation - NYSIF is not your only option.  Qualifying restaurants may be eligible for Restaurant Safety Group insurance that significantly saves its members on net cost dollars.

    • NYS DBL

    • Benefits

  • Discount Options

    • Pay in full

    • Trade association discounts

    • Sprinkler system discounts - Qualifying systems save you from 10% to 40% depending on the details on your restaurant insurance premiums.

*Fees will be charged for products that we do not sell directly or for representing you to insurers as a broker, for consulting service where no insurance product is sold, or for handling NYSIF Workers Compensation policies in any capacity.
